Why Is Maglev So Fast?
Zero Wheel-Rail Friction
Conventional trains are limited by wheel-rail contact forces. At 400+ km/h, friction and track wear become prohibitive. Maglev has no physical contact, so friction is not a limiting factor.
Linear Motor Propulsion
Maglev uses linear induction motors — the track itself acts as a stator, and the train as the rotor. This eliminates gearboxes and allows smooth, continuous acceleration to extreme speeds.
Superconducting Magnets
Japan's SCMaglev uses superconducting electromagnets that generate enormous lifting and guidance forces with minimal energy, allowing the train to levitate 100mm above the track.
Aerodynamic Enclosure
Maglev trains are fully enclosed in aerodynamic shells without external axles, wheels, or pantographs. This dramatically reduces aerodynamic drag at high speeds.
