Train Speed Calculator
Calculate speed, distance, or journey time from any two known values — the classic speed-distance-time relationship, solved instantly.
Speed, distance, and time are related by one formula: Speed = Distance ÷ Time. Enter any two values in the calculator above and it solves for the third — supporting km/h, mph, m/s, knots, kilometres, and miles.
- Speed = Distance ÷ Time
- Distance = Speed × Time
- Time = Distance ÷ Speed
- Automatic unit conversion — no manual math needed

The Speed-Distance-Time Relationship
This is one of the most fundamental relationships in physics — every train journey follows it exactly. Because the three quantities are linked, knowing any two always lets you calculate the third.
Speed = Distance ÷ Time
Find average speed if you know how far and how long the journey took.
Distance = Speed × Time
Find how far you'll travel at a given speed over a given duration.
Time = Distance ÷ Speed
Find how long a journey will take at a given average speed.
Estimating Journey Time
Suppose you know a high-speed train covers 480 km at an average speed of 240 km/h. How long does the journey take?
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Apply formula | Time = Distance ÷ Speed | — |
| Substitute values | 480 km ÷ 240 km/h | — |
| Final answer | Journey duration | 2 hours |
Average Speed Isn't Always What It Seems
A train that hits 300 km/h on a straight section will still show a much lower time-average speed once you include every station stop and deceleration. If you want to calculate a realistic time-average speed for a full journey, use the total elapsed time — including stops — as your Time value, not just the moving time. See our full guide on average speed calculation for the difference between time-average and moving-average speed.
