How to Calculate Train Speed
Speed = Distance ÷ Time. It sounds simple, but there are multiple methods, formulas, and practical considerations when calculating train speed accurately.
To calculate train speed, divide the distance traveled by the time taken. For example, if a train covers 300 km in 2 hours: Speed = 300 ÷ 2 = 150 km/h. For real-time measurement, GPS calculates speed using Doppler shift or position changes.
- Basic formula: Speed = Distance ÷ Time
- Example: 300 km in 2h = 150 km/h
- GPS method: Measures Doppler shift in satellite signals
- Haversine formula: Calculates distance between GPS coordinates on Earth's curved surface
Basic speed formula
Speed = Distance ÷ Time
m/s to km/h
Multiply m/s by 3.6
mph to km/h
Multiply mph by 1.609
km/h to m/s
Divide km/h by 3.6
The Basic Speed Formula
The fundamental formula for calculating speed is: Speed = Distance ÷ Time. This works for any unit system as long as distance and time units are consistent.
Example 1
A train travels 450 km in 3 hours. Speed = 450 ÷ 3 = 150 km/h.
Example 2
A journey of 200 miles takes 2.5 hours. Speed = 200 ÷ 2.5 = 80 mph.
Example 3
A commuter train covers 30 km in 25 minutes. Convert to hours: 25/60 = 0.417h. Speed = 30 ÷ 0.417 = 72 km/h.
Reverse formula: Distance
Distance = Speed × Time. At 200 km/h for 3 hours: 200 × 3 = 600 km.
Reverse formula: Time
Time = Distance ÷ Speed. 500 km at 250 km/h: 500 ÷ 250 = 2 hours.
GPS-Based Speed Calculation
When you can't measure distance directly, GPS provides another approach.
Position method
Record GPS position at T1, then at T2. Calculate great-circle distance using Haversine formula. Speed = distance / time elapsed.
Doppler method
GPS receivers measure the frequency shift in satellite signals. This Doppler shift is directly proportional to your velocity. More accurate than position-based calculation.
