Why Test Speed Online?
A browser-based speed test eliminates every barrier between you and your speed reading. No app store search, no download wait, no storage permissions, no account creation. You are one tap away from knowing how fast your train is going.
Instant Access
Type the URL or tap a bookmark and you are testing. No 50 MB app download eating into your data plan, no waiting for an update before you can use it. The page loads in under a second on a 4G connection.
Privacy by Design
Browser-based means no persistent background tracking. The GPS is only active while the page is open and in the foreground. Close the tab and all location access stops immediately — no background service lingers.
Works Everywhere
Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux — if it has a browser and a GPS receiver, it runs the speed test. No platform-specific app needed. Share the link with anyone on any device and they can test instantly.
Always Up to Date
Web apps update the moment you load the page. You always get the latest version with the newest features — no manual updates, no version fragmentation, no 'please update to continue' prompts.
How the Online Test Works
Modern browsers expose a standard Geolocation API that gives web pages access to the device's GPS receiver — with the user's explicit permission. Here is what happens when you start a speed test.
1. Permission Request
Your browser asks whether to share location with TrainSpeedTest.net. You grant access once, and the browser remembers your choice for future visits. You can revoke it at any time in your browser settings.
2. GPS Lock
Your device's GPS chipset acquires signals from overhead satellites. In open sky conditions (typical for train travel), a position and velocity fix is obtained within 2–5 seconds.
3. Speed Calculation
The browser returns a speed value derived from GPS Doppler shift. Our page reads this value every second, smooths brief signal interruptions, and displays the result on your chosen speedometer design.
4. Live Display
Your speed updates in real time on screen — along with heading, distance travelled, trip duration, and peak speed. All processing happens locally on your device. No speed data is uploaded to any server.
