How Speed Testing Works

Speed testing on a train is fundamentally different from internet speed testing. Instead of measuring data throughput, we measure physical velocity using satellite positioning. The methodology is straightforward but the underlying physics is precise.

GPS Satellite Connection

Your phone connects to a constellation of orbiting satellites (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo). With signals from 4+ satellites, the GPS chip determines both your position and your velocity vector with high precision.

Velocity Sampling

The tester samples your GPS velocity once per second. Each sample is an independent measurement from the satellite signals, not an average or interpolation. This gives you a true second-by-second speed profile.

Statistical Aggregation

From the raw speed samples, the tester computes running statistics: arithmetic mean for average speed, simple maximum for peak speed, and trapezoidal integration of speed over time for distance.

Session Recording

Every measurement is timestamped and stored locally in your browser. When the test ends, you get a full trip report. The data can be exported as CSV for further analysis in a spreadsheet.

What the Tester Measures

Each metric serves a different purpose. Current speed tells you what is happening right now. Average speed reveals overall journey efficiency. Maximum speed captures peak performance. Together, they paint a complete picture of your train ride.

Current Speed

The instantaneous velocity reading from GPS. This is the number that changes as the train accelerates, cruises, or brakes. Most useful for watching speed in real time.

Average Speed

Total distance divided by total time since you started the test. This smooths out stops, slow zones, and acceleration phases to give you the effective journey speed.

Maximum Speed

The single highest speed reading recorded during your test session. On high-speed trains, this often occurs on straight, level track sections between stations.

Trip Distance

The cumulative distance travelled since the test began, calculated by integrating GPS speed readings over time. Displayed in kilometres or miles.

Elapsed Time

How long your test has been running. Combined with distance, this confirms the average speed calculation and helps you track journey progress.

Speed Graph

A live-updating chart that plots your speed over time. After the trip, you can see exactly where the train reached peak speed and where it slowed for stations or junctions.
